32979abdf1 Restored the -D_THREAD_SAFE macro define that I incorrectly deleted 
in the previous revision.  The -pthread flag does not define
_THREAD_SAFE.  Thanks to Jeremy Lea <reg@shale.csir.co.za> for
pointing this out.
